Learning Design From Pulps

I confess that I learned just about everything I know about how to design from crappy ads in pulp magazines, including the ones below. The very first chance I had to design a publication I used these lessons without a hint of irony. No winks! No nods! Just copied the format, used Addressograph gothic typefaces and cut out veloxes with an XActo.

While studying graphic design and typography at the School of Decorative Arts in Warsaw, Mieczysław Berman (1903–1975) was attracted to Russian Constructivism. Berman’s own Constructivist collages, started in 1927, also show the influence of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) and Hannah Höch (1889–1978).

Homage to Joseph Binder

This is a short homage—for no other reason than today I’m reminded of his work—to Vienna-born artist and designer Joseph Binder (1898–1972). He came of age when poster artists were stars. Or, as his wife Carla Binder recalled  when I spoke to her in 1986, “Binder was alive during the age of Bernhard, Defke, Hadank. Elegant! And they were socially in contact with all their large accounts.

In 1902, the French inventor Georges Claude created an electrical discharged with a tube of neon gas. What he created was the world’s first neon light. He started his own neon light company, Claude Neon, and in 1923, he sold customized signs to companies who wanted to advertise outdoors. Simply put, that’s how the neon light industry was born.

Scott Stowell and Open started work on a new ACLU identity last fall, but the ACLU started the process of bringing their communications more in line with what the organization had become (more open to participation) about three years ago. The new visual identity is just the latest and most visible part of that process. The logo was first revealed to the public on the ACLU website on Sept. 26.
